At least 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its role in public projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic projects.
