Defense Department Investigation Concludes Hegseth Put Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by disclosing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Event

The chat group in question contained particulars about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other individuals in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for handling classified information.

Serious Threat to Forces

The internal investigation found that the information shared by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the report acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he formally did so.

Hegseth's Reaction

The source indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only shared information that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He added that he had the right to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been shared with lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be made public in the coming days.
