Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a major prize-giving event nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
